Is Carbonated Water Healthy Compared to Non Carbonated Water? Dr.Berg on Drinking Carbonated Water
Today we’re going to answer the question, is carbonated water actually better or healthierfor you than non-carbonated water? Well, through an extensive search, I could find no evidence,no studies if it’s better or worse. All I know is that when I consume carbonated water,my digestion is better. And it could be because carbonic acid could buffer the pH in a certain way.it could be because it’s a weak acid and it acidifies the digestive system. And if you make
something more acid, you’re going to absorb more minerals. You’re going to digest a little betterwith the protein, but there’s not really any objective proof other than people just saying,I like carbonated water better. If we take a look at bottled water, there’s a pH of seven.that’s just neutral. Perrier has a pH of 5.5 to 5.8. So when you go below 7, things are moreacidic. And if you go from a 7 to a 6, just by one whole number, 6 is 10 times more acid than 7.
So 5.5 to 5.8 is acidic. But let’s take a look at Coca-Cola, which has a pH of 2.5.very acidic. If you think about stomach acid, that’s one to three. That’s very, very acidic. And battery acid is 1.0, extremely acidic. And because the stomach has the lowest pHof any part of the body, carbonic acid being a weak acid might be better than just regularbottled water for certain people. It really depends on what’s going on with your body and
what you like. Now, there’s a little confusion on the different types of carbonated water.like seltzer water versus club versus tonic. So seltzer water nowadays is carbonated and it hasno minerals. There are certain types of water that’s naturally carbonated that have minerals, but the current seltzer water is artificially carbonated and has no minerals. Club sodahas certain minerals, not many, but a few, and is artificially carbonated. Then you have tonic
water, which is artificially carbonated, but it has quinine. Now in the year, I think it was 1825,there was a British officer taking quinine for malaria and he wanted to make it taste better. So he put it in carbonated water, added some sugar and added some gin. And he was able tocover up the taste of quinine because quinine is very, very bitter. And apparently that ideastuck. It became popular. And that’s what is known today as a gin and tonic. Now I personally like
bitter things. So if I’m in a plane, I will get a tonic without the gin, of course, but it’sartificially carbonated. So I’m sorry for the long video, but to answer this question,it really depends on your individual preference.
