Postmenopausal Osteoporosis – Osteoclast and Osteoblast – Dr.Berg

So I want to talk about menopause and osteoporosis and even osteopenia, which is like a precursor toosteoporosis. A lot of women who go through menopause end up having bone loss. And when Iwas in practice, I remember a dentist that came in, she went through menopause and it was justlike an incredible collapse of her spine. She actually was hunched over like this and sheneeded to get surgery on her neck because all the vertebrae were collapsing. It was just all

of a sudden after menopause, the bones just fell apart. And I was very curious why that happened.Well, this is why it happened. There’s two types of cells in your bone. You have osteoclastsand you have osteoblasts. The osteoclasts break down bone. They take calcium and other mineralsout of the bone and protein as well. Osteoblasts build bone. When you have a decrease in estrogenpost-menopausal, you get a stimulation of the osteoclasts and you get a decrease of the cells

that build bone. So when you go through menopause, you lose a lot of the production of estrogen. And when estrogen goes down, you stimulate the osteoclasts, which causes more bone breakdown, and you inhibit the osteoblasts. So you don’t have the capacity to build bone.Because the female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, are produced by the ovary andthe adrenal, and the adrenal is the backup. So when you go through menopause and the adrenals

are not strong enough to back up these hormones, then you have a situation where you have evenmore loss of estrogen, but then you have a compensation increase in cortisol. And cortisolis a very destructive hormone to your bones. There’s a condition called Cushing syndrome, which is a situation where you’re producing a lot of cortisol and you’re ending up with somepretty major osteoporosis. But increasing cortisol will do the same exact thing. It will stimulate

the osteoclasts, causing more breakdown, and inhibit the osteoblasts, which means you can’tbuild bone anymore. And this can happen pretty rapidly. So after menopause, you can actuallylose 5% of your bone in the first year. So what do you do? First thing you do is you supportthe backup organ, the adrenal. There’s a lot of things that can be done for that. I put a linkdown below. You can check it out. We want to definitely decrease stress. You need to exercise.

That’s going to help increase vitamin D. But then you also need to build the bone back up.You have to mineralize the bone. The problem is if you just take calcium in the form of calciumcarbonate, which a lot of women take, like 1,000 milligrams of calcium carbonate, it increases therisk for getting a heart attack because you’re just going to calcify the arteries. That’s thewrong type of calcium. Your body does not assimilate calcium carbonate too well. It’s like

eating limestone or cement. It just doesn’t get absorbed that well.Bone is made from many different minerals, not just calcium. It’s also made from protein.so once you support the adrenal you’ll have less cortisol to destroy the bone of course when yousupport the adrenal you have less cortisol that’s breaking down the bone and the protein in the bonebut also you can take calcium citrate there’s other forms as well you can take magnesium and

boron you can probably find a supplement with all three of these right here and you can probablyeven find that in a food-based formula trace minerals are very very essential boron is atrace mineral, but there’s other trace minerals involved in bone formation like zinc and there’sothers. But also vitamin D3 and K2 especially. Vitamin K2 is going to be very, very vital inmaking your bones solid and strong. But vitamin D3 can help absorb the calcium and vitamin K2

drives the calcium into the bone. I would recommend probably 20,000 IUs of D3 and at least 200micrograms of K2. And the form I would recommend would be the MK7 version. I do recommend grass-feddairy as well, because that’s going to also give you the calcium and magnesium and phosphorus thatyou need to build a bone. All right. Thanks for watching. I just want to say thank you so muchfor watching my videos. I really appreciate it. And if you wouldn’t mind giving me a review,
