What is Maltodextrin and is it Safe? – Dr.Berg
Hey guys, today we’re going to talk about maltodextrin. Okay, what is it? Is it safe?I’ve done other videos on this, but the reason I wanted to emphasize this one ingredient,simply because it’s in so many foods that you may not be aware of, I mean, they produce $2.64billion from this one ingredient every single year. So if they put it in infant formula,a lot of the beverages, animal feeds, beef jerky, vitamins, flavorings,
even some of the natural flavorings. They will use this as the carrier.Medicines, potato chips, soups, dry mixes, dressing, peanut butter, beer, pudding. They putmaltodextrin in pudding. Can you believe that? So the next time you buy pudding,read the ingredients, make sure it does not have maltodextrin. Now I’m being very sarcastic,you shouldn’t be consuming pudding. So now what’s the purpose of maltodextrin?
They use it as a carrier with other ingredients, a thickener, a filler, preservative,an insecticide. They actually stop the insect’s ability to breathe and receive oxygen. It alsoimproves mouthfeel. And what’s really kind of interesting about it, it’s not even that sweetas a sweetener. So they don’t even really use it as a sweetener. They use it just as a filler fordifferent products because it’s cheap. It’s from corn, which by the way, most corn is GMO. So it’s
exposed to glyphosate, that herbicide, or rice or potato or wheat, but mainly corn. Now the trendbecause of the demand for non-GMO is to make things non-GMO. So you’re going to start findingnon-GMO maltodextrin. So that may actually solve one problem, but here’s the big problem.On the glycemic index, it’s between 105 and 136. Now, as far as I know, maltodextrin is the higheston that chart. I couldn’t find anything higher than 136. I mean, you have puff rice cakes,
which is very high, and even whey protein powder. But maltodextrin, I believe, is the highest onthe glycemic index. Sugar is like 74. So this is way worse than sugar. So if it’s that high on theglycemic index, it is creating a massive surge or spike in your blood sugars when you consume it.It also changes your gut bacteria. It suppresses the probiotics or the good friendly bacteria thatyou have. It increases E. coli. So start reading the labels more closely and definitely avoid
