Why the Mediterranean Diet Has Not Worked for You? – Dr.Berg
So I had another question posed on my opinion on the Mediterranean diet, the so-called hearthealthy diet that so many doctors recommend. It’s composed of fruits and vegetables andtons of olive oil, whole grains, red wine, moderate red meat, moderate fish and poultry, and low-fat dairy. Sounds pretty healthy because people are doing this in Italy and Greece andthey’re healthy, right? So I’m just going to talk about this one study involving 7,447 participants.
I’ll put a link down below so you can actually read the study yourself. So this diet was composedof three separate groups. There were those that consume the Mediterranean diet and four tablespoonsof olive oil. Then there was a group that did the Mediterranean diet with a small amount of mixednuts. Then they compared it to number three, a traditional low-fat diet. Okay. There were a coupleflaws. It wasn’t properly supervised. Actually, the study was retracted, reanalyzed, and it was
not entirely random. I put a link down below if you want to know more of the details, buthere’s the big point. There’s no such thing as a standard Mediterranean diet. Different countriesin this region consume different diets, so there is no standard. In fact, in America, we have theAmerican version of this diet, which is pizza and wine and pasta. All right. Number two,it was only statistically significant in men, not women. Number three, it was only statistically
significant for reducing strokes, not heart attacks or heart disease. There was no differencemortality, but decreased stroke risk by 30%. So that sounds pretty impressive. I mean, decrease your risk of stroke by 30%. That’s incredible. But realize the truth is they’renot reducing your risk by 30%. All they’re doing is they’re comparing the results of these twogroups, okay, the amount of people that get strokes to the amount of people who get strokes
from this group. So if I compare an unhealthy diet to a slightly more unhealthy diet,I’m going to see changes. So this is what they did. So in reality, the numbers are kind ofmanipulated to make it sound really good, when in fact, it’s not that exciting.Okay, number five. Lots of these people run medications, high blood pressure, statins, diabetes medication. So that was also a problem because it’s another variable
that complicates the results? How do we determine how much of those medicationswere influencing the results? Okay, and number six, the entire study was sponsored by the oliveoil and nut producing companies out of Spain. So anytime a study is sponsored by someone, there could be potentially some biases there. All right, guys, thanks for watching. I’ll seeyou in the next video. Hey, if you’re liking this content, please subscribe now, and I will
