Treadmill Workout Fail (NOT GOOD!)

Trade in your treadmill workout and build ripped, athletic muscle here

what’s up guys Jeff Cavalier athleanx. com here I am back at the treadmill a place I never thought I’d be especially after making my video a few weeks back the three reasons why you don’t want to rely on a treadmill if you’re trying to burn fat and I’ll link that video for you right here if you haven’t seen it cuz we cover three major reasons why but one in particular kind of caused a little bit of controversy people wanted to debate whether or not it was actually true and it is the fact of of whether or not we’re getting the same muscles to work when we’re running on a treadmill as we are when we’re running outside I can categorically tell you that we’re not we just simply are not and if you need some more convincing I figured why don’t I make another video to further explain how that works and why that is first of all when you have when you’re doing anything when you’re running outside or walking outside there’s a couple phases of our gate that we want to focus on one of them is when our foot hits the ground right and that foot is on the ground that’s called stance phase and while it’s on stance phase the other leg happens to be doing the opposite and that swing phase so the leg is coming up forward so you go from swing phase it hits the ground stance phase swing phase stance phase just like that in order to propel your body Outdoors when you’re running or walking it really doesn’t matter what pace of course the the higher the faster the pace the more muscle involvement in the hard of the contraction but the fact is when you go into stance phase and you Propel your body forward you need the muscles of the back side the hamstrings the glutes to do all that work for you it’s not happening magically but here on the treadmill oh it happens magically for sure because you use your hip flexors already overuse muscles in most people to lift and then place your foot on the belt and as you can see from here it just goes for the ride I don’t need to contract my glutes and hamstrings other than to just stabilize the leg I certainly don’t need to contract them to to overcome the the the force of the ground to pull me forward it simply takes the ride back and if you want to demonstrate this yourself turn on your treadmill stand over here and watch how easy it is to let your arm just go back passively behind you the same thing will happen with your legs well if we want to make sure that our muscles are working the way they should especially if you’re an athlete and you need to ultimately take your performance out into the field because you’re not going to be running on a treadmill in competition you need to start being able to run on the field you don’t want to rely on this treadmill as your form of conditioning now I know that in certain times whether it be bad weather or a lack of access to anything else you might have to run on a treadmill and calorically calorically you can burn calories on a treadmill I never said you can’t burn calories on a treadmill you won’t burn as many calories on a treadmill as you would running outside because again you’re using more muscles in your lower body to achieve an outdoor run than you would be here why because we’re eliminating that posterior chain where we’re on this treadmill because it’s again going along for for the ride so what’s the better way to do it well the better way would be to turn this damn thing off if you have the opportunity and try to run on the treadmill by using the muscles on the back of your legs the most underutilized muscles the problem we all have the the the muscles we all have problems with the glutes and hamstrings most people are chronically underdeveloped back there anyway so get on the treadmill turn the motor off and let your muscles be the motor and Propel yourself backwards you can see it’s much harder for me to do this than it was when I just let my arm take the ride back what do you think’s different about here running out in the real world it’s the same scenario you got to let those muscles work and for those that say oh just turn the treadmill up to a 1% incline and that will take care of all your problems it will equate the same level of effort that you use when you’re outside with wind resistance it’s not what we’re talking about guys and by the way that study has been debunked many many times it only works if you’re running a 7-minute mile or less and most guys are using a and women that are using a treadmill don’t run a 7-minute mile or less so you have to understand that if we want to use the muscles that we’re ultimately going to try to use when we’re out in the real world then let’s get them out in the real world and work them the way they’re going to be worked so this is not to necessarily hate on the treadmill guys yes I have one myself but you’ll notice it’s pretty damn Dusty it’s an old Trotter that I inherited about 15 years ago and it won’t be with me for much longer I can guarantee you that but I need it if I need to do something in a pin I can’t get outside I think we all have access to a tread we probably all have one buried somewhere in our houses for that reason but I will tell you if I’m going to train somebody I want to get the highest functional carryover and I want to get the maximum color burn I want to get the maximum effort and I want to utilize my muscles the way they’re actually going to be used in function then I can damn well bet that I’m going to get somebody outside much faster or on the ground than I would be to have them run on a treadmill and I hope that you make the same decision if you have availability of both so hopefully you found this little recap video and and and sort of zeroing in on this one aspect of the treadmill to be helpful and if you did make sure you leave your comments in a thumbs up below and whatever else it is that you want to see of course guys I always say leave it in the comments and let me know what it is and I’ll cover it in a future video we got three videos a week to do so you certainly got a lot of room to cover what it is that you want to see all right I’ll be back here again soon see you
